Marjal Pego-Oliva y Rabdells Route

Circular route of 41.6 km starting at the Tourist Info in Oliva and ending at the same location. The route will take us along paths, ravines and tracks to the Marjal Pego-Oliva natural park. Located in a cove between the Mostalla and Segària mountain ranges, it is the southernmost coastal wetland of the Valencia Gulf.

A natural setting on a Mountain Biking route

It is a mixed space, built from geomorphological processes and anthropic action not exempt from conflicts.

The ecological richness and the exceptional hydrological system of the marsh have led to greater environmental sensitivity and the declaration of 1,290 hectares as a protected area, both at the regional and European levels. Inside the park the route will take us to the bird observatory. We will retrace our tracks to get between the motes of the rice fields and thus reach the Ullal del Bullentó. Here we can stock up on water for the rest of the route.

Mountain Biking:
Marjal Pego – Oliva y Rabdells Route

We will go on to tour the most beautiful part of the park, the Salinar, the Muntanyeta Verda and the Blau del Calapatar, to return to the Sant Pere streams, which regulate the flow of the Bullent River. These are of vital importance for the water regulation of the park.

We will go out along the walkway to the Font Salada or Ullal del Burro, a source of saline water with healing properties for the skin, where we can cool off by taking a thermal bath in its waters always at 24º or in the beach bar with a good soft drink.

Little by little we will leave the natural park to reach the coast and travel along it from Oliva Nova to Oliva, passing through the camping area, the Rabdells Dunes, the mouth of the Gallinera river and the Oliva promenade. Once this part of the route has been completed and after the yacht club we will arrive at the Vall de les Fonts, a track that will take us back to the beginning of the route.

LA MARJAL PEGO – OLIVA

La marjal, located between the provinces of Alacante and Valencia, between Pego and Oliva; It is surrounded by the mountains of Mostalla to the north, Mediodía to the west and Segaría to the south, a strategic horseshoe that protects one of the best wetlands on the Peninsula. Throughout its 1,250 hectares of surface, delimited by the Bullent or Vedat rivers to the north and the Racons or Molinell to the south. It was declared a Natural Park on December 27, 1994.

The marsh is also part of the Ramsar Convention for the global protection of wetlands since 1971, it is declared a special protection area for birds (SPA) and is integrated into the Nature 2000 Network of the European Union. Nature 2000 is a European ecological network of biodiversity conservation areas.

SAN PERE GATES

5-leaf gates operated by metal handwheels. The floodgates, used since ancient times for rice cultivation (until 2003 they were made of wood), regulate the flow of water in the Bullent River, being of vital importance for the water regulation of the park.

EL BLAU DEL CALAPATAR

A space where the river is shown to us surrounded by yellow and beautiful lilies at the foot of a magnificent and generous wooded area. On the southern slope there are numerous numbered wooden platforms, assigned to fishing. Next to the wooded area there are some old ruins from the 17th century and a small house, in front of which there are a large number of freshwater sources, habitat of Valencian endemisms such as the Gambeta or the famous Samaruc, in serious danger of extinction as a result of the loss of their habitat, the contamination of aquifers and the artificial introduction of predators. The presence of the samaruc, practically extinct in Safor, shows us the great quality of the river waters and the sources where it feeds.

EL BULLENT

The Bullent, a river that usually carries a large flow of water throughout the year, including in times of drought. Due to this characteristic, it is classified as the largest river in Europe in relation to its short route, just over 6 kilometers, although the upper part is an artificial channel to provide an outlet for the disappeared Revuelta River, which formerly crossed the marsh.

Birth of the Salinar River

It is a small river with crystal clear waters that borders the Muntanyeta Verda to the south and progressively widens.

Ullal del Salinar

The Salinar ullal is a spring of fresh underground water that flows from contact with the calcareous reliefs of the Verda muntanyeta. The water evidently has an excellent quality, clear and clean, and a really low salinity, a circumstance that has allowed the presence of a very rich underwater vegetation (macrophytes), considered the best of all the wetlands on the Peninsula.

Font Salada – Ullal del Burro

Font Salada (or Ullal del Burro), located in the heart of the Pego-Oliva Marjal Natural Park, is a perfect spot for bathing both in winter and summer, as the water temperature remains around 23ºC year-round (always above 21ºC and reaching up to 29ºC).

    Notices

Gallinera and Aigüera de Sant Josep river sector

During the rainy season, avoid this part of the route as it tends to accumulate water and has many muddy areas.

    Natural Park Sector

VERY IMPORTANT – The Regalatxo area now has two sectors with a chain, behind it a little further on we will see a door that we can open, but which we must leave closed as we pass, since it is to prevent the cattle from escaping. Both on the way there and on the way back, we will find these doors and chains. The passage of bicycles, horses and hikers is not prohibited. This prohibition is only for motor vehicles.

The cows in the Regalatxo sector are large animals. It’s impressive to pass by them when you see their sharp horns, but they don’t do anything as long as we don’t bother them.

Another option to avoid this area is when you reach the Km 11.2 beacon, continue straight and do not reach the bird observatory. This same mark after the return is the one at Km 16.9, therefore we would shorten the route by 5.7 Km.

The access to the park from the stone bridge to the Sant Pere gates has periods of dense vegetation, so caution is needed with thorns and nettles.

If you notice any anomalies along your route, please let us know at hola@tracksandpedals.es so we can resolve them as quickly as possible and, with your contribution, prevent them from affecting other users.

Excellent service by Domingo and his employee. I rented a bike for 2 days for a friend of mine. We doubted the size of the frame because my friend was in between sizes. We measured it and choose the BH XL with Ultegra group and rim brakes. We picked up the bike Friday and we could return it Saturday or Sunday (whenever we preferred) and had to send a WhatsApp message 30 minutes before we would arrive (because the shop was closed). We returned the bike Saturday after we watched the finale of Milan-San Remo. Everything was handled smooth and the bike was good.
